CBS evening news, person of the week.
Bob Schieffer reporting.
“Few times in life you have the chance to meet someone that
changes your life forever. A person who
is witty, funny, lights up a room w/ his very presence. An individual who doesn’t seek to be the center
of attention but always seem to be the focus of it. A person who is a charismatic natural leader with
a confident commanding presence. I have
found Scott Pearce to be such a person. Upon
meeting him you notice his eyes light up with love and his face brightens with
joy to be in your presence. He radiates
light, energy, vitality and love. He
makes you feel like you have always been his friend and are the most important
person in the universe”.
“Scott came to our attention after marketing an award winning adventure
game that is sweeping the globe. A game that is inspiring both old and young to
love to learn more about history, science, philosophy, astronomy etc”. (news
commentator shows audience the game)
“Although a powerful and confident individual, he humbly
declined an interview giving all credit for his success to his wife and family
so we managed to catch up with several of his grandchildren. Here’s what they had to say about their grandfather”.
(cut to taped interview)
“So you
are both Scott Pearce's’ grandchildren”?
Yes.
And what
are your names?
I’m Legend, and I’m Carter.
So what
is the most memorable thing about your grandpa?
(Carter) Grandpa’s cooking!
Yea… grandpa would always quote Chef Guesteau from Ratatouille who said “anyone can cook, if
you follow your heart.”
(Legend) Yea and
grandpa believed that cooking was an expression of love. For example we would go visit and say grandpa,
were hungry and he would say O.K. look in the fridge and cupboards and pull out
everything you think looks good.
(Carter) So after we had finished cleaning out the entire
pantry, grandpa would take all the food and consider them ingredients and
combine them into a three course culinary delight. It is amazing how he can combine anything in
such a way that the flavors melt into your mouth and they never clash.
(Legend) Best of all was that while he cooked and while we ate, we would
talk and he would listen, make jokes, and with quiet wisdom help solve all of
our problems, make us laugh and we would leave feeling full and like we could
conquer the world.
(Carter) He does that
for everybody. He’ll cook a big meal and
then invite the neighbors over to try it out and then play games all evening
entertaining their whole family.
(Legend) Yea grandpa could have been a stand- up comedian. He is so quick witted and funny it’s hard to
feel down when you are in his presence.
What
else does your grandpa do?
(Legend) He always wanted to fly so after his youngest
daughters were out of High school, he took flying lessons and built his own
plane.
(Carter) Which is amazing cuz grandma wouldn’t let him have
a motorcycle.
Have
you gone flying with him?
(Carter) Yea – he’s a very good pilot, like he was born to
fly. He puts on this funny hat and wears
an old silk scarf and makes all the noises of the plane while he is running
through the check list and then takes off and it’s hard to be scared when you’re
having so much fun.
(Legend) I think that is why grandpa is so good in his career. He is a religion teacher and works with youth
and loves teaching. He considers all his
students “his children” and has a way of helping each of them see the divinity
within themselves. He makes the
scriptures come alive and is able to apply them to the students’ lives so that
they want to live the gospel. He helps
them each have a personal relationship with their Savior. He’s a teacher who keeps getting better and better every
year he teaches.
(Carter) AND HE'S TAUGHT A LONG TIME... and his ties keep getting more loud and crazy wild! He also
taught college kids but felt the Junior High and High school kids needed the most
encouragement so he chose to stay there.
Most of his colleagues thought he was crazy for not accepting
administration opportunities or staying at the university.
(Legend) He is CRAZY! That’s why he is so good.... and with all his money he could have retired a long time ago but he loves teaching and says it keeps him young. He loves his students and they love him.
(Carter) Over the years we couldn’t go anywhere w/o running
into a former student who wants to shake his hand and say thank you. And I mean everywhere! Grandpa is an explorer / adventurer and he
loves going all over the world. His
passions include SCUBA diving and looking for the lost city of Zarahemla. He says that the rain forest has so many
varieties of green that it makes your eyes hurt to look at them all. Well, one
day in the sweaty hot jungles of Central America at the ruins of Copan and he
ran into a former student who was serving a mission there. The young man was so excited to see him he
almost started crying. They spent an
hour in the shade of some trees sitting on the steps of one of the ruins
talking. Years later, they still keep in
touch.
(Carter) Did you know that grandpa is also an amazing martial
artist; fast as lightning and strong as an ox but he decided to give everyone
hugs instead of a beating. He always
said karate strengthened his mind more than his body.
(Legend) Speaking of his mind, grandpa is amazingly bright. For example, he loves and understands the things he puts into his games like: science, astronomy, history, geology, philosophy... He is the wisest person I know.
So tell me about your grandfathers game.
(Legend) Well grandpa always loved treasure hunts and would leave clues for us grand kids to find presents, have adventures and keep us busy. So that's what he did, he invented a giant treasure hunt and it's awesome... I'd tell you more but you really just need to buy the game... you will love it too.
(Carter) Grandpa would never admit it and has never told anyone but secretly he gives away most of his money to others who need it. He finds opportunities to help others and supplies them with anonymous gifts like the new married couple who needed a washer and dryer, the single mother of two that needed a car to get to work… stuff like that. He also gives away his time... he taught all his kids and grand-kids how to ski. he takes you and pays for the lift ticket and lunch and we make a day of it. It's so great to spend time with him.

What
stands out the most about your grandpa?
(Carter) His love for grandma. He always says “he’s the luckiest man in the
world”
(Legend) yea, that
would be it. He is the happiest person I
know. I have never heard him complain
about anything or anyone. He never says
a bad thing about anyone. He has this
ability to just know who needs help and to be there at the right moment. He’ll say, we need to go visit so and so on
the way to the restaurant so well stop by and someone will be crying and
say they were just praying for someone
to come by and help. He will comfort
them and leave a blessing and then we will go and eat. It’s really cool how he just knows stuff.
(Carter) And he never
tells you what to do – he just inspires you to figure it out on your own and he’s
always there to support you whatever you decide or do. And he has never missed one our our sporting events, birthdays or activities.
Well it sounds like you boys are pretty lucky to have such an amazing grandfather.
(Legend) Yea , we’re
the lucky ones… as is everyone who meets my grandfather.
Thanks boys, now back to the news...

First time on your blog, Steve; it is so unique! You drew me right in to your story & captured my attention ~ I really believed you'd already been all those places, but this is looking back after you've met your SMART goals, right? that was a bit of a mystery since there are no dates in your story. Love your theme, by the way.
Nicely put together Steve. Very creative idea in how you expressed your personal pivotal needs. They swirled around and interacted with the stories told by the Grand kids. Though I have not met you, I could visualize your dreams (with the help of the about me page) played out. Fun Stuff
There is no better place to be then working side by side with the Lord where He has destined me.
This was a real joy to read about your imagined life. I feel like we have known each other for a long time. Very creative use of your grandchildren.
